Janamsaakhis

Literally taken a ‘Janam-Sakhis’ means… life story made up of parables on the Guru's life, each consisting of a series of separate incidents or chapters normally in chronological order, entitled 'saakhis' or 'gosts'. The script for the Janam-Sakhis is Gurmukhi, but the language was a composite dialect called ‘Sant Bhasa’ akin to Punjabi.

Janamsakhi’s are a symbol of a spiritual way of life in Sikhism and forms the matrix of the foundation of our faith. They are quite akin to the parables of Jesus found in all canonical Gospels describing his life, death and resurrection. Janamsakhi’s are an age-old trove of Kathas….stories, or we could say a series of anecdotes compiled to preserve the teachings and travels in the life of our Gurus.
